Contributed by Douglas Anderson The first steam engine built to run on the UK mainline for almost 50 years has made a successful trial run. The locomotive is an almost exact copy of an engine built 60 years ago. It has been more than 40 years since the last engine was retired in the 60s. Building this one cost 3 million pounds, which was raised by donations. 2000 members of the trust contribute monthly to pay for the engine and its operation. Compared to diesel engines, steam engines are more polluting,
but if put into service hauling say 500 passengers from A to
B, even a steam engine is far more efficient than the large number
of private motorcars needed to move the same number of people. ![]() About the Author:Douglas Anderson has been fascinated by trains since he was
a little kid. |
